December: It's a Wrap!

Proud Moment: Kindergarteners are working so thoughtfully creating beautiful cards for the elderly residents at St. Andre in Biddeford. These are personalized cards written to specific residents that have no visitors and who will be greatly cheered by these amazing holiday masterpieces!
Pond Cove Weather Station!
We learned about the special equipment we have in Natureland to help us track the weather! (A BIG thank you to Lindsay Barrett for all her work on this.)
We are "Weather Watchers!"
Thermometer
There are thermometers on various sides/heights to compare temps in sun, shade, etc..

Rain Gauge
There are rain gauges on either end to track rain fall and compare amounts in each gauge.
Yard Stick
The mounted yard stick is for measuring snow fall.

Anemometer
The cup anemometer is an "old-fashioned" way to measure wind speed. Most are digital nowadays (though still include the spinning cups). Children can qualitatively describe how fast or slow the cups are spinning, or try to count "spins per minute."

Wind Sock
The wind sock is an airport wind sock. It's meant to be used with the compass rose on the ground to determine wind direction; if the tapered end of the sock is pointing east, the wind is coming from the west, etc. It's also a very visual indicator of wind strength.

Compass Rose
The compass rose helps us identify the direction the wind is blowing.

Mathematicians had to count their sticks by making bundles of tens and adding ones to figure out their total number of sticks.

Students are writing about their favorite holiday tradition!
They were so impressive, I had them laminated and sent home for you to treasure.
Author Study: Jan Brett
Students listened to Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett and worked on response sheets- reflecting upon the characters, setting, beginning, ending and favorite part of the story.
We had a blast creating our cinnamon gingerbread people!
The room smells amazing!

We drew patterns, lots of details and used candy stickers to make our Jan Brett inspired (paper) gingerbread houses!

We read, The Mitten by Jan Brett and then decorated and wrote about our own colorful mittens!
(Come check them out in the kindergarten hallway!)

Writing Celebration!
We celebrated the magnificent writing that is taking place in our classroom by having authors share their stories with rotating partners- giving compliments and appreciating each others work.
